It's # 13 for Emily!

Today Emily spent most of her day studying even though it was her 13th birthday, but it was yesterday afternoon at a very unusual "cocktail party" that the fun began...

The magic hour was 5:30, after all guests had arrived, that everyone took on the personality of the assigned character given to them in a special birthday invitation. There was a preppy cheerleader who was always trying to cheer everybody on and jack them up with excitement, the queen of an unknown country that thought everyone was her subject, a crazy homeless lady who conveniently introduced a pillow as her baby, a French girl who spoke very little English and was an emotional wreck, somebody with a food obsession and a beauty queen has been; just to name a few. Our birthday guest of honor was a gracious southern belle who talked of little but her dear, darling kittens.

Guests were greeted by the butlers (Daddy, Tom and brother, William), taken to the ballroom and served endless glasses of Shirley Temples. Everyone got to know each other and then was escorted to a lovely sit down spaghetti dinner (still in character).

After dinner everyone had to guess each person’s character and idiosyncrasies. Prizes were given for the best portrayal, best costume and many other bests. Dessert was served (Emily's favorite...PIE!), then a movie, ending with snacks and a sleepover.

A big shout out to party planners-coordinators; Mom and Dad who worked hard and did a terrific job!

Kate's Egypt rebuilt on the Mountain!

I got to Northcroft too late last evening to climb up the mountain to see the progress made toward rebuilding Egypt, which had been damaged when several large trees fell on top of it last Spring.

This morning I made the climb and was happy with the restoration of what once was.

Huge tangles of up-rooted trees, logs and massive limb debris still remain, but much has been cut up and stacked out of the way.

The roof and screen windows have been replaced. Kate's ancient hieroglyphics are still intact...

and the Pyramids of Giza remain for other children to play in.

Although there is a bit more work to be done, I appreciate the efforts of a local neighbor and friend, Wayne Watkins, who has worked to clear the path and rebuild the little building, making it possible for us to climb to Egypt, again.

Kate is going out the door again. Headed off for at least a years commitment to teach English in another country. While she has yet to finish the process and sign a contract, she is hoping Korea to be her final destination. Tomorrow she catches a plane for England where she will join Simon, complete final papers and wait for visas to come through. I wish them safety, good health and success in all that they take on. We will all miss Kate terribly but look forward to hearing about her adventures. Godspeed Kate, Skype whenever possible and know that you will be in my daily prayers.

Kim, Tom and family came over for lunch after church today. Shannon, Molly and family joined us for the Christmas gift exchange we missed with them during the holidays. As usual, we had a terrific time together. I love every moment with each individual in this family; each gathering is a special treat!

A moving, candle-light Christmas eve service at church,

with the S-C family joining us for our annual Christmas Eve Dinner...It was the perfect Christmas Eve, leaving us with great expectations for the morrow.

P.S. Mike: Tommy Malone, our host at Christmas Party, greeted me with; "your son is a great guy and I love him", making me feel so proud of your accomplishment. It is so lovely for us when we hear sweet words like these about our children. Sorry we missed seeing you, Mary and the children.

Beth and Adrienne took the Pedersen/Kelley family to Horizon, a restaurant in Sausalito, to see and enjoy the holiday lights boat parade.

The S-C's invite us yearly to join them for brunch and a visit with Santa at their lovely country club. William brings his list and the big kids see to it that Santa gets it!

A Christmas dinner with the S Crofts included all the lamb you could eat, good conversation and lots of game playing.

The Lawyers' Club Christmas Party was at the Fox this year. We walked the red carpet, were greeted by wonderful carolers, toured the theater and met up with good friends (above is T's partner, Carlton). One of the best parts of this party is running into my son Mike in the crowd. It sure makes me proud (I would have taken a picture of him and his beautiful bride, but I didn't want to embarrass them).

Natalie is a self proclaimed "incorrigible optimist" and has been a wonderful influence in my life. She came to us from Ukraine, became my brother's wife and a loving family member. She has used her gifts and her courage to get through the hardest of times and is a pillar of strength. A Little Elfin Mischievousness

Each year, the night the family Christmas tree goes up and is decorated at the Sabonis-Chafee house, a wish is made by one of the children and a magical elf comes to stay for the duration of the season to grant that wish and others made nightly until Christmas day. Morning always brings an exciting surprise as everyone stumbles down the stairs to find out how their wish was granted…In Elfie style of course.

This morning was the first morning of Elfie’s return and he did not disappoint…

I'll let you know of any more mischievousness that is brought to my attention. :)

Mike, Mary, Joe and Isabelle went to Washington DC this year for a Thanksgiving, educational holiday. They have been exploring all day and were headed for a Thanksgiving dinner when we caught up with them by phone.

Shannon and Molly were also in Washington, visiting colleges and having Thanksgiving dinner with 33 members of Molly's family and their friends. What a celebration that must have been!!!

Kristin cooked for her family, Beth and Adrienne. Adrienne is healing nicely from her recent surgery; and she and Beth brought a delicious squash casserole to add to the table.

"We're going out on a limb this year, adding some new dishes to the rotation...cauliflower gratin and roasted brussels sprouts with red onion and bacon. I can't wait to set the holiday table!" - Kristin

Kate did a reverse Thanksgiving in England! She prepared a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for Simon, her hostess (Simon's mother) and I am not sure what other family members were there. What a treat that must have been and I love the idea of our Kate sharing our family traditions in the mother country. The circle is complete and thanks to God for Skype!

Let me take a moment to thank, Kim, Tom, Andrew, Emily and William for giving thanks in church with us this morning, for bringing wonderful food to the house to add to the sumptuousness of our beautiful Thanksgiving table and for filling my heart and arms with love the rest of the day.

I am a blessed mother; you all honored me today in ways untold. I love you so much and in every way I am grateful. It has been the best of Thanksgivings and so good to think about all of us under the same bright sky.

Grandad and I were treated to a very special day today. First an early morning stop for Grandparents' Day at St. Martin’s. Isabelle greeted us, and confidently did her job as hostess, showing us the elementary students' art work and the plans and progress of the school’s new building program. We were treated to a lovely breakfast, songs from the children and touching stories about their grandparents, told by a number of selected students. It is plain to see why Joe and Issy are doing so well academically!

After leaving, we headed for Roswell to have turkey dinner with William at his school. As he came off the play ground and spotted us, we were again greeted with a big smile and a welcoming hug. It was pajama day at River Eves (last day at school before Thanksgiving break), anyway, William promptly pulled clean clothes from his book bag and hurried into the bathroom to change so he could properly take us to lunch. It was a good thing too, since his classmates thought Grandad (dashingly dressed in a dark three piece suit) might have been a “presidential candidate”! William follows suit on tie-day Friday and everyday he just plain shines.

These are indeed precious moments. Ford, Andrew, Joe, Morgan and Emily, no longer have Grandparents Day; too old you know, but blessings abound and I wouldn't take a million dollars for one, past, present or future day with any one of the Magnificent Nine.

Joe's picture made it again in St. Martin's school magazine called Patterns. This time he got a full page! Looking good JOE!

Starting the college tours!

Kim, Tom and crew hosted Shannon, Molly and Ford to Berry College for one of many College visits that Ford has been (and will be) making before deciding where to go to school next year.

The perks of this visit was that you could horse around with your cousins instead of working hard to look like you know what your doing!

Ford even tried out the baseball field while the others cheered.

Okay...so this could be an Omen!

Anyway, it was a good experience; Tom and Kim got to go back to where they spent much of their happy youth, Andrew got to start his tours early and practice his driving, Ford broadened his knowledge of how schools can look different, I'm sure William got to run around and the family had a lot of fun together!

Good luck Ford! We know you will do well where ever you land and we'll keep a light on for you.

Ma's salute to the Veteran

My Uncle Kenneth (mother's brother) sent this poem to me this morning. I was touched and thought I would share. On every scrap piece of paper she could find, "Ma" wrote poems all her life, even as a young girl. No one knew until her death the hidden talents of this God fearing, humble home maker and mother. I remember her only as being old, with a loud heavy voice, hard of hearing and picnics on the front room floor...I had just turned nine years old when she died.

"This poem was written by Ethel Mai George Floyd on Armistice [now Veterans] Day, evidently in 1918, since she mentions her son, Elroy, as being 16 years old. Thanks Mama."

Adrienne is recuperating...

Adrienne is recuperating at home following significant surgery to repair an injury to her shoulder which she received while assisting a large, combative patient in the hospital. The surgery went well, but she will have a lengthy recovery period, followed by months of therapy, to regain full use of her shoulder. In the meantime, this Nurse is a patient, and Beth is her caregiver. We all pray for a complete recovery for Adrienne and strength for Beth, as they work together to regain their health and strength.

More Halloween Treats!

This is Felly...our sweet friend, brought to us by Rob and endeared to us at Judy/Louis' home and at Nana's on special occasions and holidays. Felly had her first American Halloween last year and just loved it. She wanted to dress up and go for the treat, so Rob drove her around (after all she was as small as most of the children) and let her enjoy the experience! She couldn't wait this year to do the same!!

Felly is from Thailand and has been here on a work program, as a nanny, for two and a half years. She has fulfilled her obligation and is required to go back to Thailand next month. There she will joyfully be reunited with her family but also have to face with them the devastation of the resent floods. Her family has yet to be able to return to their home to assess damage. I can only pray that all has not been lost and more can be salvaged.

Thank you Felly, for letting us into your life and becoming part of ours. You have been a joy to know and love. I wish you nothing but the best. We will miss you a lot...Auntie Merry

“Isabelle tried out and made the 2011-2012 Atlanta Colts Competitive Squad today, she is so excited! She had worked so hard on her back handsprings and it paid off!”…

This girl is a ball of enthusiasm and I love watching her cheer. I also witnessed her giving her all doing that perfect back handsprings and I could see the excitement on her face at the accomplishment. YEA ISSY! You and the rest of the magnificent nine are giving us so much to cheer about!

William WINS for the second year!

I would like to say that Mimi's photography camp at Northcroft this past summer prepared him for his school's photo competition, where he recently won 1st place, but since this is William's second year in a row to win; I think he is just a natural! The theme this year was diversity and from my experience in the North GA apple houses and Mrs. Oliver's kitchen, I'd say he hit the nail on the head!

News Flash!

Emily and friends had an early Halloween party tonight and these creative (BFF) geniuses put their heads together, turned them into crayola points and are going to be the Belles of the ball!

Check out the feather eyelashes and the color coordinated fingernail polish and hair ribbons. They also made their shirts!

What's a Kalu Yala?

It surely has been nice having Kate home for the last several weeks, but she left yesterday morning for yet another adventure. Behind this venture is a company (with progressive ideas) called Kalu Yala, http://www.kaluyala.com/wiky/anewtown/. She will be working with its CEO and former Westminster classmate. The project involves seeking investors, as well as lifestyle ideas and creating an ecco- friendly, self sustaining community, at the edge of the Panamanian rain forest. The land has been purchased, many interns are working their magic and they are now well into the next phase of the project...taking their ideas to investors and contributors all over the world.

Good luck Kate, I know Kalu Yala is lucky to have you on its team.

Emily is playing this week in a production of Alice In Wonderland. She is playing the part of the Mock Turtle, and sings a lovely but sad solo about soup. :)

Issy ran for and won a seat on the St. Martin's School Student Council.

William has become a trendsetter and has designated Fridays "Tie Day Friday" at his school.

Kate is preparing for an investment campaign with the CEO of a super-sustainable Panamanian development called Kalu Yala. (Read about it here!) It has been in the planning stages for a couple of years and is now ready to take off! With all the research and preparation she has been doing I am sure she will be an asset to the company. Good Luck, Kate and Kalu Yala!!

Joe was recently featured in Atlanta Magazine in an ad for St. Martin School.

I don’t mean to expose Kimberly’s broken heart, here on the walls of Chatterbox, but I hope through these walls we can remember, commiserate, share, love and put to rest the life of Mattie, the Sab-Cha Cat.

It is natural to expect that we will comfort each other when we lose a person near and dear to us, but we are not allowed to grieve as such when it is our pets. I remember when Nava died and feeling the sadness within the Regas family and Michael’s touching tribute. I so wanted to let them know that I understood.

Mattie has been with Kim and Tom from shortly after they began their lives together 20 years ago. Mattie warmed the hearth of their first home and taught them how wonderful it was to expand their love for each other. Seeing that love to fruition, Tom and Kim laid Mattie to rest today. She had stopped eating, was labored in her breathing and after the veterinarian did all he could this weekend, they bravely went back this morning and on his advice took Mattie out of her misery. Make no mistake, this is such a kind, loving and terribly hard thing to do.

Pretty soon the family will smile instead of cry at the thought of Mattie, who gave so much pleasure and so little displeasure; but today we will all mourn her loss and feel sad about the pain in the hearts of Tom, Kim, Andrew, Emily and William. If you need to talk about Mattie, you can put it here on Chatterbox, we would love to listen.

This is to Mattie, the Sab-Cha Cat, thanks be to God for the Gift!

(A strong genetic background for longevity can't be discounted. Given proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions or untimely accidents…You gave Mattie a good life!)

Tonight the house is back in perfect order. The television in the basement is silent. Terr is upstairs in his office and I in the Kitchen/Den. My mother just sent an inspiring forward. The performers on American’s Got Talent sing and dance. It’s Tuesday night, Kate and Simon moved on today... westward, to see New Orleans, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona...I miss their essence in the house.

Last week our Kate went from painting signs on Little Corn Island, Nicaragua, to redecorating the garage for her mother, in Atlanta! Of course she had a little help from her friend...

Simon, a British friend of Kate's who came to check out the U. S. after being on Little Corn teaching scuba diving for three years. They decided to do something nice at the Heath while staying here so they took everything out of the garage, scrubbed and power washed the oil stained, concrete floor, painted the walls and wainscoting, then put it all back together again! Now Terr and I have a nice fresh, clean garage to drive our cars into. :)

This is to honor and mark the passing of Mary's mother, Marlene Lockwood on August 8, 2011.
Marlene gave us Mary and we were grandparents together.
Over the years Marlene joined us for all special occasions and became family to all of us.
Mary, Joe and Isabelle spoke eloquently at her memorial service on August 24th, 2011. She would have been so proud.
Marlene will be missed.

Summer Camp, Issy and Emily Style!

All grown up and always good friends, cousins and YaYa sisters (along with Morgan) Issy and Emily have taken on, as camp counselors, a summer camp this year full of arts, crafts, water play, music, snacks and lunch for eight little neighborhood girls that attend!

I was quite impressed this morning when I went to photograph and see for myself what Issy and Emily's summer camp was all about. Today's theme was HOLIDAYS. The girls had many listed and had fun activities to celebrate each one...

Looking around the room I found all kinds of projects that had gone on before I arrived, including a ping-pong table full of hand painted pillow cases that were laying out to dry...

Camp looked fun and all the little girls looked so happy, especially when it was announced that it was time for Popsicles!

While the girls were busy playing games, Mama Regas was up stairs preparing lunch ( I saw alphabet shaped french fries being prepared that looked really yummy!), so before I left the campers graciously gathered to pose for a picture (less one camper who had to leave briefly for a doctor's appointment). Then I slipped out to avoid further interruption.

Everyday this week, from 10:00 o'clock to 2:00, Isabelle and Emily have been working; taking on the full responsibility (except for lunch preparation) of running a day camp for girls. They faithfully clean up when the day is over and then set up for the next day of camp. From tuition, the girls planned and bought supplies for each activity and will get a pay check from what is left after expenses. I saw evidence of some really good book keeping too! From what I witnessed, I'd say the demand for Issy and Emily's camp week will be high in the coming years. Congratulations girls on a job well done...

This week grandson, William has been at Northcroft attending a little "Photography Camp" that I am doing for him. We have had a great time learning about, perspective, making a flip book, going on picture safari and reading about how to take pictures. Today he is having a lesson with a friend of mine who knows a lot about taking pictures. William is fun, interested and enjoys learning. He is also starting to beat me at Rummikub!

Yesterday we got caught in Ms Oliver's garden by a rain storm! It has rained all night too but maybe we can use the gloomy day to take pictures of reflections in a rain drop.

Some of us got together in the mountains for our annual 4th of July long weekend celebration and...

The "supper" sparklers are a kid favorite that is exquisitely displayed, and danced with, prior to the fireworks show.

All fireworks are kept fairly close to the ground so as not to catch the forest on fire!

But the show packed a powerful punch in beauty and length!

Joining us this year, from England via Little Corn Island, was Kate's very special friend, Simon. With his love of family and attention to the children, he fit right in!

The girls found a place under the stairs to make a "Club House"...and I can come in! They are giving up the king sized bed to sleep in it tonight! Every time I go down stairs it gets better and better. They are cutting pictures they like from magazines and taping them to walls. We now have a whimsical curtain over the entry door. A bed is to the left, behind the shelves...

Granddaughters are staying with me for a few days. With all the giggling going on, I don't know how I got such solemn pictures! They are all from different children and love getting together. :) We have gone to dinner, made cookies, played many games of Rummikub and Clue, gone for a long walk, caught fireflies in a Mason jar, taken showers, watched TV with popcorn and gone to bed...and all that since 4:00 this afternoon!

2. The discovery that four or five trees had fallen on Egypt.

5. To assess the damage, Kate and Simon suited up to kill a nest of bees in the tangled mess around Egypt.

Isabelle fights for a cure!

Isabelle, touched by her Grandmother Lockwood having Alzheimer's, wanted to do something to help find a cure for this dreaded affliction. So she took action to help her cope with the fact that her grandmother was slowly slipping away from her. She got on line, bought rubber Alzheimer Awareness bracelets and sold them to everyone she met. That set off a chain reaction at a Lion's Club meeting where her father had his outgoing president's gift of $500.00 allocated to Alzheimer's and he told Issy's story...a member stood up and said let's keep it going and they passed around a hat and got over $500 more in cash increasing the dollar amount to a whopping $1,000+ donation!

Isabelle made a difference. I am proud of this granddaughter, for myself and for her grandmother, Marlene, for wanting to help and doing it!

What a wonderful adventure Terr and I had, on a recent visit to Italy. These are long videos, and Vimeo had a hard time copying them the way I made them; but I just had to have the memory on Chatterbox. So, if you ever want to see what we saw...I give you first Tuscany (with siblings and friends), then four fascinating days in Rome with a driver and a guide named, Mayta. We were treated like royalty, riding in a Mercedes-Benz, our door opened for us by a handsome, polite driver, every time we stopped, cutting long lines and going in back ways. We were taught years worth of Roman history by a very knowledgeable, no nonsense, guide and after the first night we stayed in an dark, mirrored, exciting suite of rooms that soothed us after a long day of site-seeing. It was a time to remember and revisit from time to time. Then we topped it off by coming home in the front of the plane, where I watched three movies and ate all the way to Atlanta!

Now, as I relive it through these pictures, I find the trip even more magnificent, now that I have the time to to reflect and take it all in. All the time we were gone, I had a sense of being very privileged, very blessed and humbled by the life God has given me. I can only hope and pray I will never take it for granted and will always pay my blessings forward.

The Miracle of Children

No, He'll never let go of me...

This morning Kim sent me a text saying I had plenty of time to run over to the Church for closing day ceremony of Vacation Bible School...that is if I wanted a blessing...

Well, I have been touched this year because Andrew and Emily gave their time to Apostles VBS as volunteers, now that they are too old to be campers. Joe and Isabelle did the same at their church's VBS. It is the most remarkable thing to see, the tenderness that these four young people have for younger children. If God is love then they have God within them for sure.

And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?

I was indeed blessed and touched to tears. I wish I had taken a better camera to capture it. If you have really good eyes you might be able to pick out the S-C children in the top clip. If the sweetness of the ceremony wasn't enough for me emotionally; a young man got up to tell us how the children (and the church) had collected many, many huge duffel like bags of school supplies and were (tomorrow morning) leaving to take them to the children of Nicaragua because when asked what they needed this was their request. Well, I have ties in Nicaragua and I have seen some of the precious children on Little Corn Island...I wanted to help too.

The helpers, teachers, and staff members have made a difference this week in Bible Schools all over this city. At Apostles they put the word of the Lord in the hearts of 900 children. I do believe it will bear fruit!

My Italian Birthday Party!

Beginning with Kimberly, my incredible Atlanta family got together and gave me a night to remember for my birthday. Kimberly set a lovely table for an Italian feast.

Kim worked tirelessly making everything delicious and authentic: appertizer of chips with an incredible dip, antipasti, delicate lemon dressed salad (by Mary) pancetta carbonara and fantastically fresh bread. The fine wine came from Molly and Shannon and Andrew topped it off with his famous pound cake, served with a huge bowl of strawberries! Listen to me...could not have been any better!

It was a GRAND kind of birthday celebration! Really thoughtful gifts along with many warm wishes.

My Regas babies gave me a special smile and it lit up my world.

Shannon and Mary modeled my and Kim's new, fashion, beach hats. Look out Grayton, here we come!

Later we watched almost an hour of Mimi's Italy video while Grandad narrated.

Thank you family for being so attentive and interested.

Thank you Kimberly for coming up with and executing such a lovely evening.

School Is Out!

Summer 2011 begins! Grandad and I split up to attend three of our nine graduation/honors day/end of school year programs this year, but we have glowing reports that each of our nine had a brilliant finish!

Ford – Baseball still his game, Ford continues to be an excellent student at Woodward Academy finishing with a 3.93 GPA and is moving up to the 11^th grade next year.

Morgan – Gave a short speech at her 6^th grade graduation from The Children’s School:

“I always knew looking back on my tears would bring me laughter, but I never knew looking back on my laughter would make me cry.” Cat Stevens once said. If I cry for how long I have laughed here, I would be crying for a long time. Hi. My name is Morgan Croft and I have been at this school for nine years. I have had a great time here, at TCS and I want to thank everyone who made it possible. First, thank you mom, dad and my grandparents for your support and love. I also want to thank all of my wonderful teachers, especially my Pre-Primary teachers, Debbie, Sarah, and Kelly, my first grade teachers, Wilma and Peg, my fourth grade teachers Megan and Anna, and of course my sixth grade teachers, Naimah, Julia, Paul, and Ricky. I will never forget to thank my friends, who made me laugh and who have helped me get through the days that were too long I have had many laughs at TCS and I hope to have lots more at my next school, Woodward Academy.
…and needless to say Morgan is moving on, with honors, to the 7^th grade class at Woodward Academy.

Emily – On Honor’s Day at Wesleyan, Emily received an award in Art for, "Courageous Growth". (I have seen this in her many times when we work on an art project together or when she presents me with beautiful hand-made cards or a painting!). She has the boldness of an artist. Emily also had a very strong academic finished to her year. Seventh grade, here she comes!!

Andrew – was given three awards at the end of the year Honor's Day: 1.) Bible (given by his teacher, the headmaster) for consistent effort and achievement. 2.) English, for excellence 3. The Iron Wolf award given to those who participated in 3 sports and /or theater presentations during the school year. Andrew was a swimmer/actor. He begins HIGH SCHOOL next year in the 9^th grade!

Joe – finished the sixth with all A’s and is moving on to the 7^th grade next year at St. Martin's. Really remarkable because he did it while being successful in football, basketball, and on two baseball teams, all the school year long!. I think he got in some golf and deep sea fishing with his dad as well.)

Issy - This future teacher is also a straight A student and keeps up with a social calendar the Queen of England would be impressed by! She has been a cheerleader and a soccer player. Issy is moving onward and upwards to the 5th grade.

Keegan - will not finish up his school this year until June 9th but he expects to make the honor roll for the third time completing a very successful year! Another full time ball player, Keegan pitched a no-hit game and is a league-leading batter. Keegan will enter the 7th grade in the fall.

Aidan – still has a few more days of school to go, but in Greek costume, he will present the story of King Midas at his school’s open house. (Oh how I would love to be in the room for that!) In addition to being his team's leading batter, Aidan has taken up running track, completing 60 laps in 75 minutes… such perseverance! He will be graduating to the 4^th grade when school starts up again.

William – has had an exceptional growth year, not only has he been placed in all TAG classes throughout the year, he is a delight and will no doubt catch up with all the rest of his cousins very soon! I would be remiss not to mention that this 7 year old also picks up his toys, without being told to, when he comes to Mimi’s house!

With much pride I congratulate this super bunch of hard working, fabulous children. You have made us all very proud by your effort to give your best.

Sing me to Heaven

If I could give but one lasting gift, in this life, it would be that of a close family, one that eats, plays and prays together, as well as supports each other in time of grief or need...

Upon returning from Italy ( blog soon to follow) I washed, repacked and rushed to Tennessee so as not to miss an extended family gathering to fellowship, eat and sing, in support, joy and love of one another. For me it was also a way to sing my Aunt Dot to heaven.

In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices

and my soul finds primal eloquence, and wraps me in song.

At my sister and brother-in-law's lovely home, everyone brought their favorite covered dish, added it to a warming drawer packed with fried chicken and a marble counter top covered with delectable desserts. Then as the numbers grew, so did the fun; we hugged and kissed, caught up with each other's journeys, and we each caught the hands of the newest member as she happily showed off her new footsteps. Suddenly my heart leaped I when I heard the music began to play and slowly, along with the laughter, Jesus became the center of our praise.

I looked around that room, seeing my childhood flash before of my eyes: my uncle sitting at the piano singing in familiar cord, several of my precious Aunts who showed me by example what a woman should be, my mother, brother and sister who remain forever part of me, cousins staying true to family traditions and the newer generation that finds something comforting about what is now the, "old ways".

If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby,

If you would win my heart, sing me a love song.

If you would mourn me and bring me to God,

sing me a requiem, sing me to Heaven.

I laughed, I remembered, I was touched...and I ate too much! Oh, rejoice families! Make every effort to keep strong the ties that bind. Then you too, from time to time, can also be sung to heaven (bathed in love) right here on earth.

Thank you, Tennessee family for singing your hearts outs and letting me join you once more by making my joyful noise! Softly I sang for Jesus and Aunt Dot.

I am sitting in the middle of a grassy field, on a farm, in Tuscany, Italy. It should be a wonderful place to be, except for today I walked out to this field, away from my Terr and his family, with whom we are traveling, to try and comfort my heavy heart so that I might go on with my day.

You see, sometime in the middle of my night, being Monday morning for my Tennessee family, my beloved Aunt Dot died. Oh, she was 85 years old ( just celebrated her birthday with a glorious party on May 3rd), she was a good woman, always positive and happy, she had great kids who took special care of her, she got so much enjoyment from books, the Braves and a TV show called, "Murder She Wrote", she played music, loved Jesus... and she loved me too.

Oh, how terribly sad I feel.

She took me in as a baby because my sister, Betty, was already taken and she had none of her own, yet. I will never forget the creative treasure hunts, the grasshopper song she taught me to play on the piano and the telling of her stories. (She always told the story about me, as a little girl saying, "I don't know where is'em?")

Aunt Dot gave me scriptures over the years that I have marked in my bible with her name. More recently she promised to pray with me, each night for my Kate's safety. I counted on it and I know for sure that she did.

She will be buried on Thursday and I am wandering around Italy, away from those who loved her. Oh, I am fully aware that she is happy to be in heaven but I also know that she would want us to support Susan and John, their spouses and her grandchildren. My comfort is; as, I knew her heart, she knew mine...and she knew, for sure, that I loved her. I'll be home soon.

Good bye, Aunt Dot, (or should I say arrivederci, Zia Dot) look out for me too, will you?

A Story about Aidan by Alan

Aidan is being lifted by Keegan and another team mate.

Last night Aidan got a dramatic base hit to win the game for our team, the Tigers.

We went into the bottom of the final inning behind 8 to 2. The Tigers rallied, mainly by obtaining a lot of walks from the opposing pitcher. By the time Aidan got to the plate, the Tigers were down 8 to 7. The bases were loaded, and there were two outs.

One of the first pitches hit Aidan's finger and bat at the same time. That hurts! Aidan was hurt and crying. I went out to check on him (I'm the coach). The umpire said that we could bring in a substitute hitter since Aidan appeared hurt. I asked Aidan if he would like to stay in the game or have a substitute come in. He was crying too much to speak, but he motioned that he wanted to go back up to the plate.

Aidan came back up to the plate. He got behind in the count... no balls and two strikes. The bases were still loaded with two outs, and the Tigers were down by one run. If Aidan had allowed one more strike, the Tigers would have lost.

Aidan hit the next pitch solidly up the middle, allowing two runners to come home to score. The Tigers won! The team preserved its undefeated record for the year (seven wins, no losses).

Aidan's teammates and Keegan came out onto the field and started chanting "Aidan, Aidan, Aidan!" They carried him off the field to the extent a bunch of nine and ten year olds can carry someone off the field.

Very soon after receiving the game ball, Aidan handed it to me and said, "Can you hold this? I want to go get some popcorn before the snack shack closes."

Today is Joe's day. He was born in 1998 and today he is 13, that's THIRTEEN years old! Over the years it has has been my privilege to see the softer side of Joe (sometimes kids are a little more gentle with Grandparents than with others) when he has come to stay with me, at least once a year while his parents are out of town on an annual trip. He has always been a delight to have around the house and has never fails to touch my heart.

I still feel my heart strings tug when I see him these days, on the baseball field, out to dinner, at home doing his homework, at school on Grandparent's day... always doing his boy thing, too old to be taken care of, but every time we hug hello or goodbye, he is so sweet to let me say, "I love you" with my embrace, and my heart always feels his goodness.

I see him trying to be the best he can be, whether on the baseball field or doing his homework. That's good character, grandson, and every time I see you biting down intently on your tongue as you are throwing a baseball, I know you are in the zone, digging deep down inside and praying you succeed. That's a good quality to have, and that's what I think makes you the best of the best!

Thirteen, I can't believe you are already 13! Oh, how I have loved watching you grow so fine. Remember, Jesus will be your best friend for the asking and your best is always the ultimate gift you can give.

Happy Birthday, dear Joe. Can you hear me and Grandad singing?!

Home Grown Random Act of Culture

After the Wesleyan Jr. High Player's hit show, "Seussical", part of the cast went out to dinner to celebrate a successful closing night. The cast came up with the bright idea to share a song from the show with the patrons of the restaurant where they were eating (joining the many who have recently performed in huge numbers, at malls etc., their version of a random act of culture). I'm sure you will recognize the tall, beautiful, white shirted, brother and sister team (Andrew and Emily), standing together with their backs toward the camera, as they join in the impromptu performance!

What fun! There's no business like Show Business!! I've always wanted to do this!!

The Future Teacher...

When my niece, Abigail, was a little girl she taught every doll and friend that came into her make-believe class room. Playing school was her favorite thing to do and there was never a doubt what she would be when she grew up. She is now a teacher with a real classroom that looks much like I would have expected it to look, perfectly in order with lots of attention to detail. She loves her job just like she loved playing it, not so long ago!

I mention Abby because I am seeing a repeat story in my granddaughter Isabelle’s life. Although she has many interests, she spends much of her time in her specially designed classroom, teaching her stuffed animals (only eight at a time), writing test papers and grading them, keeping current bulletin boards and good behavior charts.

Emily went with me recently to take notes while I interviewed Issy and snapped photographs of this future teacher.

Isabelle's special class room is but two steps up from her own lovely, well appointed bedroom. It is hard not to stop and stay awhile in her room filled with bright colors and loads of lovely, girlie treasures. But, for this day we are interested in Issy's passion for TEACHING!

While there we explored the world using her special globe, to see were Nicaragua was located. We looked at the very old dictionary that once belonged to her Papa (Emily's too). We read her rules, looked at her math papers and decided that she, like Abby and her Aunt Carol before her, will make an excellent teacher when she graduates from the pink and green classroom above her bedroom.

Weekend events

Emily and I shared a day of her Spring Break painting pottery and going for a visit at the Regas household.

Mary showed us the results of her fabulous workout room,

The stunning new wine celler,

and Isabelle's stylish room as well as the "classroom" where she teaches (see blog at a later date!).

Learned that Bethann and Adrienne got a new puppy.

Michael and Isabelle attended this years Father-Daughter Dance. What a handsome couple they make!

Andrew returned from a wonderfully uplifting mission retreat and everyone enjoyed being back together, relaxing on the new sofa.

Ford and Joe played baseball in between rain drops and Morgan agreed to spend a few days with me on her Spring Break the first week of April! (See that too on a later blog!)

Grandad and I are Greeters at church on Sunday, where we will later give thanks for our blessings.

I turned to Aidan and asked, "How much money do you want to have when you retire?"

He replied, "$17 billion so that I can be an old person with a jet pack." ...

Sharing my day with you...

This morning I donned my trusty old boots and headed for a long anticipated hike to the waterfall . The day was perfectly warm and beautiful.

I stopped many times along the way to snap photos of old familiar sights that never fail to move me each time I'm here...

Up or down the Fightingtown.

After climbing to the top of the hill I realized it had been too long and too many pounds ago since I have tested my endurance.

But the views along the way encouraged me to keep on making this journey. I should always keep going, no matter how slowed down I might become.

The water was moving quickly through the small tributaries in the valley below the road I was traveling...

as well as alongside it.

I began the climb up the mountain trail to the waterfall. I stopped halfway up to catch my breath and try my skills with the self timer.

I made my way down the ever narrowing path towards the falls. The sound was thunderous as it revealed itself to me in all it's glory.

I sat down on the mossy bank and watched for a long, long time...

Kristin Celebrates a Birthday!

Kristin, attorney at law, partner in her own law firm, wife of Alan, mother of Keegan and Aidan, has little time for counting birthdays, but celebrating is certainly in order for this successful daughter! And in between the ball games her sons are playing, I hope she will find time to feel the special love and good wishes we're sending out to the West Coast!

Alan tell me that Kristin spends a good deal of her down time going on walks with him and watching a little "trashy" TV. She is into Real Housewives of Atlanta and Beverly Hills, Gene Simmons, and The Hills. "Monday will be a big day for us as we watch the finale of The Bachelor!" Well, I guess everyone needs to escape the real world every once in a while.

Kristin is also a bit addicted to her e-reader, the Nook. "It is what helps her calm down after a hectic day before falling asleep." (Now that's a habit most of the family shares!)

I can also tell you that she calls her father and me every so often to just chat, catching us up with her life and those of the rest of her family. She lets us talk and ask questions for as long as we like, never acting rushed as we know she must be.

Trying to give the boys a great spring break this year, Kristin and Alan took them to Washington DC for a look at our nation's capital.

Baseball season is in full swing!

Last Saturday Keegan pitched for the first three and a half innings (a no-hitter) and also was a few feet shy of a homerun on his first at-bat. The ball hit the wall at center field and even dented the sponsor's sign!! Keegan's team (Red Sox) won their game in the Majors, as did the Tigers (Aidan's team, coached by Alan) in the Minors. The Tigers blew out last year's Minors champions, 11-5. Aidan was second in the batting order, sacrificed his first at-bat and hit a single later in the game. His hitting is strong this year, and he's a great fielder.

Aidan calls Alan "coach" on the field. Alan is coaching his team!

Spring Break 2011

Molly and Ford are on a ski trip in Utah! Molly has bravely taken to the slippery slopes and is doing a good job for her first time skiing, but she tells me that Ford rides the snow like a duck on water!

Morgan has her Spring Break at a different time from Ford, so she and Shannon are back home attending work and school as usual. Their vacation will have to come later. When it's her turn, I wonder if Morgan will prefer climbing mountains as to sliding down them?

Meanwhile back in Park City, Molly and Ford are staying at a luxurious home with a beautiful view from the hot tub. They are also sharing some special time with Molly's locally located cousins.

It's Spring Break for the Regas family and, like Molly and Ford, they too are on the ski slopes, but they traveled to Colorado's Rocky Mountains at Keystone. I found this photo on facebook,and I will post more pictures if I receive them. (Isabelle and her Dad had just come from a Mardi Gras party where Issy acquired many beads and a lovely mask.)

Everybody have a wonderful time, but DON'T break-a-leg like Andrew and Emily are doing this week in their Jr. High School Musical performances!

Let's hear from California! Do you have a Spring Break and how are you planning on spending it? (Aidan, I just got home from a visit with my mother and heard your sweet voice on my answering machine. Thank you for the call. It sure made me miss you. I hope to find a time we can talk real soon...do you have Skype on your computer?)
